Wang Yi: China Opposes Treating ASEAN as A Mere Figurehead and Starting All Over Again
2021-08-05 10:25

On August 4, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 11th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting and expressed that multilateralism reflects the progress of our times and is the right approach to resolve intertwined issues. China supports ASEAN statement on advocating multilateralism and is ready to jointly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law. Meanwhile, we should remain vigilant against various kinds of pseudo-multilateralism, and resist bloc confrontation on the pretext of multilateralism in our region in particular. ASEAN centrality in regional cooperation should not be treated as a mere figurehead, and we should not replace the existing and mature regional cooperation mechanism and start all over again.
