Wang Yi Holds Talks with Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto
2021-07-25 13:54

On July 25, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

Noting Finland as a Western country that established diplomatic ties with New China at the earliest, Wang Yi said, mutual respect and friendly cooperation have always defined China-Finland relations. Facing the attack of COVID-19, both sides extended each other support and help, which strengthened and deepened the two countries' friendship. China appreciates the publishing of an updated action plan on China by Finland days ago to emphasize stronger cooperation with China, and is willing to strengthen synergies of strategic plans with Finland for greater mutual benefit and win-win results and more contributions to regional and world peace and development.

Wang Yi said, both sides should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, equal treatment, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and win-win cooperation, which govern the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Finland. China hopes Finland will view China's development objectively and rationally, stay committed to an independent foreign policy, and develop relations with China in a way that best suits Finland. China is willing to increase exchanges and cooperation with Finland in scientific and technological innovation, the circular economy, and clean technology, and hopes Finland will provide a fair and open business environment for Chinese enterprises. The two sides should strive to overcome the impact of the pandemic, and conduct talks on putting in place a bilateral "fast track" to promote the healthy and orderly movements of the people. China welcomes Finland to participate in the cooperation on projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. China hopes to beef up cooperation with Finland in fields such as culture, tourism and winter sports, and welcomes Finland to participate in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Wang Yi said, China pays much attention to the "spirit of Helsinki" advocated by Finland, supports Finland in playing an active role in regional and international affairs, and is willing to work with Finland to uphold true multilateralism, strengthen data security cooperation, carry out third-party cooperation with Africa, and facilitate collaboration between China and Northern Europe, to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. The two sides should jointly resist the practice of politicizing the COVID-19 origin-tracing issue, facilitate international anti-pandemic cooperation, and make joint efforts to defeat the virus.

Wang Yi pointed out, instead of fundamental conflict, there are only enormous cooperation needs between China and Europe, and it is definitely possible for the two sides to seek mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. China and Europe are not rivals but partners, and both sides' common interests are far greater than their differences. China is willing to strengthen mutual trust through candid dialogue with Europe, resolve differences through equal consultations, and promote the sustained, healthy, and stable development of China-EU relations.

Haavisto said, Finland attaches great significance to the fruitful relationship with China. Finland-China relations carried forward a development momentum against the pandemic disruptions last year which marked the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Finland is willing to work with China to enhance mutual understanding, strengthen dialogue and communication, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation for greater development of bilateral ties. Finland hopes to talk with China on the establishment of a "fast track" and further reinforce cooperation in connectivity, climate change, green economy, data security, and North Pole affairs. Finland expects to participate in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and wishes it a success. Finland fully understands China's concerns over the COVID-19 origin-tracing issue and advocates that origin-tracing should be conducted scientifically. Europe and China have broad common interests and huge space for cooperation. Finland hopes that Europe and China will focus on cooperation, bridge differences through constructive dialogue, and work together to address global challenges. Finland supports the EU-China investment agreement and hopes it will be approved as soon as possible.
