On June 23, 2021, President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence to Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu on the death of former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda.

Xi Jinping pointed out in his message that Mr. Kenneth Kaunda was an internationally renowned leader of the African independence movement, politician, social activist, and the founder of China-Zambia relations. He played an active role in promoting China-Zambia friendly cooperation in all fields, and established a profound friendship with the Chinese leadership. Chinese people will always remember his outstanding contribution to the development of China-Zambia relations. I will continue to work with President Lungu to strengthen the traditional China-Zambia friendship, expand friendly cooperation in all fields, and carry forward China-Zambia friendship to benefit both countries and their people.
