Wang Yi Speaks with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio on the Phone
2021-06-21 14:35

On June 21, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said, China appreciates Italy's adherence to its friendly policy towards China. In the face of profound adjustment and transformation of the international situation, the Chinese side is willing to work with Italy to step up strategic communication, consolidate strategic mutual trust and get rid of all distractions. China is ready to join Italy in pushing forward bilateral ties in the right direction for the better benefit of the two peoples, and greater contribution to world peace and development.

Wang Yi said, in the first five months of this year, China-Italy trade increased by 50 percent year on year, and Italy's export to China increased by 75 percent, achieving the highest growth rate among major EU countries. This fully demonstrates the strong resilience and huge potential of China-Italy practical cooperation. China will pursue opening-up at a higher level to promote high-quality development, welcome more Italian companies to invest and do business in China, and hopes that Italy will provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies. The Chinese side is willing to conduct closer high-level exchanges, facilitate personnel exchanges and promote the Belt and Road cooperation with Italy. China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Italy in such areas as scientific and technological innovation, aerospace, clean energy, digital economy and third-party markets and push the mutually beneficial cooperation for more outcomes, so as to jointly inject momentum into the global economic recovery. China supports Italy in hosting the G20 presidency and making positive contributions to strengthening international cooperation on fighting the pandemic and global economic governance.

Wang Yi said that in the face of unprecedented global challenges, all countries should insist on cooperation instead of inciting divisions, respect each other instead of launching political attacks, and shoulder due responsibilities instead of shirking them or shifting blames. He hopes that the European side will adhere to strategic autonomy, practice true multilateralism, and promote the stability and long-term development of China-Europe relations. China and Italy are both countries with a long history. Mutual respect, inclusiveness and mutual learning reflect the wisdom of the two ancient civilizations. He also hopes that Italy will play a constructive role in this regard.

Di Maio said, Italy-China relations are strong and continuous, which are just like two friends. Italy hopes to push forward Belt and Road construction with China, strengthen cooperation in energy, industry and third-party market, and take the opportunity of the 2022 Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism to enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China plays a crucial role in promoting global economic recovery and multilateral cooperation. He thanks China for its support for Italy's G20 presidency. In the face of a complex and challenging international situation, Italy is ready to conduct effective dialogue and cooperation with China within a multilateral framework and practice multilateralism, which will benefit not only the two peoples but also the whole world.

For the upcoming 47th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Wang Yi elaborated on China's solemn stance. He said that some countries, ignoring basic facts, made smear attacks on China and politicized human rights issues, which interfered with the normal agenda of the human rights council, poisoned international cooperation in the field of human rights, violated the norms governing international relations of non-interference in internal affairs, and is doomed to fail. Justice is in the hearts of the people. Wang Yi believes that at this meeting, there will also be more countries that uphold justice and support China's just position.
