Wang Yi Speaks with ROK's Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong on the Phone
2021-06-09 14:38

On June 9, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Chung Eui-yong.

Wang Yi said, under the guidance of the consensus reached by the two heads of state, China-ROK relations have been developed smoothly. As the international and regional situation changes rapidly recently, it is necessary for China and the ROK, as strategic partners, to strengthen communication in a timely manner. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the ROK. The two sides should cherish the hard-won achievements of cooperation and create a sound atmosphere and necessary conditions for the continued and steady development of bilateral relations. The Indo-Pacific strategy proposed by the United States is full of Cold War mentality and stirs up confrontation among different groups, which is not conducive to regional peace, stability and development. China is firmly opposed to it. As friendly neighbors and strategic partners, China and the ROK should know well the rights and wrongs, stick to the correct position, abide by political consensus and never be misled.

Wang Yi said, the two sides should continue to make good use of the joint prevention and control mechanism and the "fast track" to prevent the cross-border spread of the pandemic while ensuring necessary personnel exchanges. We should speed up the second phase negotiations on the China-ROK free trade agreement, strengthen cooperation in high technologies and emerging industries, and continuously promote and deepen high-quality integrated development of the two countries.

Chung Eui-yong said, as a close neighbor of China, the ROK attaches great importance to developing the strategic cooperative partnership with China, adheres to the one-China principle and fully recognizes the sensitivity of cross-Straits relations. The ROK is ready to deepen political mutual trust with China and strengthen cooperation in various fields to inject more connotation and impetus into ROK-China relations and release more positive signals for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Chung Eui-yong also expressed the ROK's strong desire to improve the south-north relations and advance the peace process of the Korean Peninsula. He hopes China will continue playing a key constructive role on this issue.

Wang Yi said, China supports the improvement of the south-north relations and has made efforts to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Wang Yi called on the United Nations Security Council to invoke the reversible provisions in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)-related resolutions and ease sanctions against the people's livelihood in the DPRK. Wang Yi also urged the United States to take practical actions to carry out the Joint Statement reached by the U.S. and the DPRK leaders at the Singapore meeting.
