Wang Yi: Japan Should Take a Cautious Approach to the Disposal of Fukushima Nuclear Wastewater
2021-04-21 18:25

On April 21, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi mentioned about the discharge of Fukushima nuclear wastewater by Japan during his video consultation with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

Wang Yi said that, the Japanese government, without exhausting safe disposal measures, without fully disclosing relevant information, and without discussing with neighboring countries and the international community, made a reckless decision to dump the nuclear wastewater of Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea. It will not only jeopardize the interests of people in China and other neighboring countries, but also threaten the global maritime environment and international public health and security, and in the end will damage the common interests of the international community, including Japan itself. The Japanese side should respond in earnest to the serious concerns of the international community, neighboring countries and its own people, take a highly responsible approach to the international public interests, and fulfill its due international obligations. It should reconsider its current plan, and carefully deal with the disposal of nuclear wastewater on the basis of full consultations and consensus with stakeholders, the International Atomic Energy Agency and other sides.
